Follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplants are done by taking individual hair follicles from the back of your head and implanting them to the hairline or thinning and balding areas. This will make the hair in the new area look thicker.
Long hair and short hair graphs performed on the same day.
Traditionally, a major disadvantage of FUE is the need to shave the entire donor area or even the entire head. This is a major issue for females and males alike. Long hair (no shave) FUE was then developed to overcome this, but the process of extracting thousands of long hairs is very time consuming.
Most clinics will only do small cases using purely long hair due to this longer time and tedious graft handling. With short hair FUE (shaved), we can extract up to 3,000 grafts in a single day, making it advantageous in regard to outcome, but difficult for people who don’t necessarily want to shave their head.
With Hybrid FUE, we can overcome most of these problems which opens FUE for those that refuse to shave their hair and just do not want to appear like they’ve had a hair transplant.
Partially shaved FUE is a hair transplant technique that offers a slightly less noticeable option for individuals seeking hair restoration. Unlike traditional FUE, where the entire head is shaved, partially shaved FUE involves shaving only the donor areas of the scalp. This allows for the extraction of healthy hair follicles while leaving the front and top hair intact, providing better coverage during the healing process.
This technique is ideal for men who prefer to maintain their hairstyle during the recovery process. While it offers the benefit of minimal visibility post-surgery, there still may be some mild redness or scabbing in the donor and recipient areas. Recovery time is generally quick, and results begin to show within a few months as the transplanted hair grows in naturally.

For women, we shave a “window” in the back of your head and your long hair will fall over it to conceal any evidence of the procedure. The longer the hair the better, as it will conceal this window better. All other hairs will be left long and natural. The shaved hair will begin to grow back in 1 week. Ideal for women and men with long hair.
Shaved “window” in back donor area, long hair falls over to conceal this. Window can be smaller depending on the number of grafts.
Recipient area in female, notice the native hairs kept long and natural and new hairs placed among them.
Fully shaved Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a hair transplant procedure in which the entire donor area, typically at the back and sides of the scalp, is shaved to allow for easier access to hair follicles. This method allows the surgeon to extract a higher number of grafts efficiently and with greater precision. Fully shaved FUE is often recommended for individuals who need a significant number of grafts or prefer a quicker procedure. While the shaved area will be visible during the healing process, this technique allows for a faster recovery and optimal results due to the larger number of grafts that can be harvested.
Men can expect a straightforward approach where the entire scalp is shaved to allow for efficient extraction and transplantation of hair follicles. This method enables the surgeon to access the donor area more easily and precisely, resulting in a faster procedure and increased graft viability. After the procedure, the scalp may experience some redness, scabbing, and mild swelling, but these effects typically subside within a few days to a week.
For women, we will shave a “window” in the back of your head and your long hair will fall over it to conceal any evidence of the procedure. The longer the hair the better it will be concealed. Shaved length will be at a “0” length.
Dr. Tracy has had androgenic alopecia for about 20 years. After intermittent finasteride usethroughout that time, he decided to start PRP when it first was used for hair loss in order toexperience it firsthand. PRP, along with finasteride, stabilized the remaining native hair. A fewyears later, he decided to proceed with an FUE procedure, and had a 2,100 graft fully shavedFUE to his frontal hairline. He has since been maintaining his hair with oral dutasteride anddutasteride mesotherapy needle freewith Alma TED.

This is a 27-year-old male with androgenic alopecia for about 5 years. He initially came to see Dr. Tracy to see what he could do about his hair loss. After reviewing several options, he was started on topicalfinasteride drops and began PRP with Acell procedures (2 total). After 1 year of stabilizations, he cameback for a consult about lowering his hairline. It was decided that FUE would be the best way to addresst his and a 2,200 graft partially shaved FUE procedure was performed on his frontal hairline. He also began dutasteride mesotherapy to further stabilize his hair loss to prevent future thinning.
