Female Hair Loss
Female hair loss is usually multifactorial, caused by hormones and genetics. Stress and inflammation can also play role in certain types of cases. We routinely see women of all ages with different severities of thinning, from mild to severe.
Many women come to our clinic after a being left frustrated by the lack of treatment options they were given from their personal physician or dermatologist. We understand female hair loss much deeper than most and have extensive experience with successful treatment outcomes.
HAIR SHEDDING
If you’ve been noticing more hairs on your pillow, in the shower floor, or hairbrush than normal, you may worry that you have hair loss. You could actually just be shedding more hair than normal. There is a difference.
It’s normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day. When the body sheds significantly more hair every day, a person has excessive hair shedding. The medical term for this condition is telogen effluvium (link to telogen section?).
Excessive hair shedding is common in people who have experienced one the following stressors:
- Lost 20 pounds or more
- Given birth
- Experiencing lots of stress (caring for a loved one who is sick, going through a divorce, losing a job)
- Recovering from an illness
- Stopped taking birth-control pills
Most people notice the excessive hair shedding a few months after the stressful event. For example, a new mom can see excessive hair shedding about two months after giving birth. The shedding usually peaks about four months after giving birth. This shedding is normal and temporary.
As your body readjusts, the excessive shedding stops. Within six to nine months, the hair tends to regains its normal fullness.
If the stressor stays with you, however, hair shedding can be long lived. People who are constantly under a lot of stress can have long-term excessive hair shedding.
We can help determine if you have normal shedding or hair loss and develop a treatment plan for you.
HAIR THINNING
Many females come to us with concerns for generalized thinning hair or that their pony tail is smaller than it once was or their hair just doesn’t feel as thick. This can be due to many reasons, but the two most common are telogen effluvium and androgenic alopecia. It’s important to have a thorough consultation to review the relevant history of hair thinning and anything that has been tried.
A trichoscopy exam together with a DNA Trichotest is usually recommended to determine the diagnosis and treatment plan.
FEMALE ANDROGENIC ALOPECIA
The main type of hair loss in women is the same as it is men. It’s called androgenetic alopecia, or female pattern hair loss. In men, hair loss usually begins above the temples, and the receding hairline eventually forms a characteristic “M” shape; hair at the top of the head also thins, often progressing to baldness. In women, androgenetic alopecia begins with gradual thinning at the part line, followed by increasing diffuse hair loss radiating from the top of the head. Women also may have generalized thinning all over instead of just at the part line. A woman’s hairline rarely recedes, and women rarely become bald.
TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM
Telogen effluvium is a form of nonscarring alopecia characterized by diffuse, often acute hair shedding. Telogen effluvium is excessive shedding of resting or telogen hair after some metabolic stress, hormonal changes, or medication. In a normal healthy person’s scalp, about 85% are anagen hair and 15% are telogen hair. Anagen hair is actively growing hair while telogen hair is resting hair. A hair follicle usually grows anagen hair for almost four years, then rests for about four months. A new anagen hair begins to grow under the resting telogen hair and pushes it out. If there is some kind of stress to the body, it can cause 70% of anagen hair to precipitate into the telogen phase thus causing hair loss.
Signs of Telogen Effluvium
- Only about 70% of your hair is growing
- Your scalp will start looking less dense
- You start seeing hair accumulating on your pillow, bathroom floor, and hairbrush
ALOPECIA AREATA
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that causes patchy hair loss anywhere on your body, but it most commonly affects the hair on the skin that covers your head (scalp). “Alopecia” is a medical term for hair loss or baldness, and “areata” means that it occurs in small, random areas.
SCARRING ALOPECIA
Scarring alopecias are an uncommon group of permanent patchy hair loss conditions clinically characterized by the loss of visible follicular ostia, associated with variable degrees of visible inflammation. The management of these hair disorders can be challenging and the key to successful treatment is securing a diagnosis. We have the tools to diagnose and manage these difficult conditions.

HIGHLY CONCENTRATED, PURE PRP with ACell
- Increase hair growth
- Increase thickness
- Increase blood supply
- Decrease shedding
RejuvLA offers advanced hair rejuvenation for female hair loss. We utilize highly concentrated, pure PRP to treat hair loss without invasive surgery or harmful side effects. When combined with ACell protein matrix, this becomes a highly effective regenerative treatment to stimulate hair follicles.
Not all PRP out there is the same, in fact, the quality of PRP can vary widely depending on the type of preparation kit and the amount of blood used. Be cautious if you are offered cheaper PRP or highly discounted rates. Chances are they are not using double spin
methods or low volumes of blood. We never use low quality, cheaper PRP for a reason it doesn’t work and the results are poor. We use 60-120ml of blood compared to 10-20ml at most clinics and med spas. Single spin tubes are cheaper and faster to prepare which is why most clinics use them but they hardly contain any concentrated platelets.
We know that hair loss is a common problem that can leave you feeling helpless. Dr. Tracy has years of experience using all types of PRP and other regenerative treatments for hair loss and is involved in every aspect of your care.

Personalizing alopecia treatment
TrichoTest™ is a genetic test for personalized hair loss treatment. Studies show there is a relationship between your genetic profile and how your hair loss responds to
different types of treatment. This means not all hair loss treatments work for everybody, and the success of any given treatment is dependent on your genetic profile and lifestyle factors. Using this unique test, we can identify which hair loss treatments are most likely to provide the best results for you.
There are seven different hair loss treatment categories being tested:
- Prostaglandins
- Metabolism
- Inflammation
- Androgen Effect
- Vasodilation and blood circulation
- Collagen Synthesis
